Bachelor/Master's Theses

I offer Bachelor's and Master's theses for Mathematics and Computer Science students on topics related to 3D Shape Analysis, Representation, Recognition and Matching. Below you can find a tentative list of thesis proposals. For additional details or to propose an alternative topic, feel free to contact me personally.

  • Intrinsic symmetry detection in deformable shapes
  • Shape processing and matching on point clouds
  • Analysis and processing of shape collections
  • Shape reconstruction from fusion of intrinsic and extrinsic quantities
  • Multi-way matching among several shapes
  • Tensor-based higher-order assignment problems
  • Bin packing problems, automatic jigsaw puzzle solving and fragment alignment
  • Surface flows for mesh analysis and processing
  • Correspondence densification starting from sparse solutions
  • Volumetric shape analysis and matching
  • Image processing on manifolds
  • Analysis of pairwise descriptors for detection and matching
  • Maps and distances among them
  • Geometrically consistent feature matching and smart indexing
  • Shape matching as a multi-labeling problem
  • Laplacians and processing on product manifolds
  • Descriptor extrapolation for partial matching
  • Shape integration
  • Intrinsic ICP and graph matching

Successfully defended works include:

22.05.2015
Aneta Stevanović (Computer Science, MS)
"Dense 2D-to-3D Shape Matching via Low-Rank Functional Correspondence"
[pdf]
28.11.2014
Thomas Frerix (Theoretical and Mathematical Physics, MS - joint program with LMU Munich)
"Quaternionic Shape Analysis"
[pdf]
15.09.2014
Frank P. Schmidt (Computer Science, BS)
"A Comparison of Intrinsic Metrics on 2D Manifolds"
[pdf]

Inter-disciplinary Projects (IDP)

I also offer IDP topics for Mathematics and Computer Science students. A tentative list follows:

Study and implementation of a simple tool or framework for boolean geometry processing of surfaces (self-intersections, subtractions, etc.). Have a look at this paper, this other paper and this website. This project would possibly lead to the creation of a new dataset for 3D shape analysis and matching problems.
Study and implementation of a method for multiple view alignment of 3D surfaces and point clouds. Have a look at this paper. The project will lead to the implementation of plug-ins for the Point Cloud Library, MeshLab, and our internal tool.

Successfully completed projects include:

16.01.2015
Emanuel Laude and Zorah Lähner (Computer Science, MS)
"A flexible tool for 3D shape analysis"

Other

I occasionally supervise/co-supervise/host visiting students/scholars at different academic levels, depending on the nature of the project and the research topic.

Successful collaborations include:

December 2014-April 2015 internship
Luca Cosmo - Università Ca' Foscari Venezia

The internship gave rise to a CVPR'15 paper and two CGF papers (to appear).
June-September 2014 visiting
Dr. Andrea Albarelli - Università Ca' Foscari Venezia

The collaboration gave rise to a CVPR'15 paper, a PRL'15 paper, and a CGF paper (to appear).
April-July 2014 internship
Mathieu Andreux - École polytechnique (co-supervised with Mathieu Aubry, École des Ponts ParisTech)
"Anisotropic Laplace-Beltrami operators for shape analysis"

The internship gave rise to a NORDIA'14 paper. Mathieu was awarded the Prix du stage de recherche en Mathématiques Appliquées at École polytechnique for the work he carried out during the internship.
